Switchboard Upgrades Perth - The Benefits: Why you shouldn't Wait

Blake_switchboard
So we all know what a switchboard is? It's that box on your house that you probably haven't checked in years. However, many of us take for granted how much it does for us.
Picture this: it’s a balmy Perth afternoon, the kids are running around, the aircon’s cranked, and someone decides to pop on the kettle. Suddenly, the lights flicker… and darkness. Sound familiar? If your electrical switchboard is still chugging along like it’s 1985, you’re not alone—but you might be flirting with danger.

With higher demand than ever for electric appliances, now is the time to have your switchboard replaced.

The New Regulations Explained - How this affects you?

In the past ten years, there has been additional regulations come out.
These regulations help to further keep you and your home safe!

Type A RCDs - In many older homes, the RCDs are only type AC.
As of April 2023, all electrical installations will not pass compliance if they contain a Type AC RCD. That is why the Type A RCD is now installed in WA homes. For further info visit Type A RCDs

RCDs on all circuits - Most homes that were built prior to 2019 only contain two RCDs protecting power & lighting circuits.

As of January 2019, in new residential builds. All final sub-circuits, including those for hard-wired appliances, are required to be protected by Residual Current Devices (RCDs).  RCD Requirements

With the additional protection from RCDs to all your circuits and Type A RCDs, it further reduces the risk of electric shock!

Switchboard Upgrades Perth- Why Consider?

Still on the fence? Let’s break down the real-world advantages of a switchboard upgrade in Perth. Spoiler alert: it’s about way more than just keeping the lights on.

1. Safety, First and Foremost

Fire Risk Reduction: Outdated switchboards can overheat, especially those with rewireable porcelain fuses. A new switchboard will have the correct rated circuit breakers to ensure they cut out if the current exceeds more than the cable can handle.

Shock Protection: With the addition of Type A RCDs to all your circuits, say goodbye to the risk of electric shocks for good—especially crucial in homes with kids or elderly residents.

2. More Power, Less Hassle

Reduced risk of power loss: The last thing you want is an old part to breakdown on a Friday afternoon. The new parts are designed to have minimal disruption to power if a fault occurs

Reduced Maintenance Costs: Old boards are a headache, constantly blowing fuses, trying to source parts that they no longer manufacture. Upgrading means you are far less likely to need an emergency call out.

Less Disruption to Power: Old switchboards typically have one RCD protecting multiple circuits, this means if there is a fault it will take out multiple circuits.
Our new switchboard have RCD/MCB combos, meaning each circuit has a dedicated RCD. If a fault occurs you will only lose that singular circuit.

3. Peace of Mind

Sleep Easy: Knowing your family or staff are protected from electrical hazards is priceless.

No More Guesswork: Modern boards are easier to troubleshoot, with clear labelling and advanced diagnostics.

Step 1

The power is isolated.
The old switchboard is then removed with all the existing circuits labelled.
If the old board is asbestos, it is put into an asbestos bag and disposed of safely.

Step 2

All of the existing circuits are identified.
The earthing is then stripped back and re-terminated and lugged.
The cables are then inspected and completely tidied up.

Step 3

The new switchboard is built to suit the installation, using the correct rated parts to ensure protection to property and people.
The new switchboard is then installed with all the cables terminated into the breakers, neutral bar and earth bar.

Step 4

The switchboard is then tested.
The typical tests performed are;
Earth resistance/continuity, Insulation resistance, Polarity & Circuit connections, Earth fault loop impedance, verification of RCD operation.
These tests are the kept on file.

Step 5

The switchboard is labelled with the following; Location of main earth, circuit identification and neutral identification. The cover is then installed and the switchboard is energised.
We will then explain to the client how to operate the new switchboard and how to perform monthly RCD tests.
